Verizon Prepaid has launched a new promotion offering 50% off its unlimited plans for 12 months. The offer was shared with BestMVNO by Dennis Bournique of prepaidcompare.net and has been marketed by a few Verizon Prepaid dealers on social media, as seen here.
This promo does have a couple of interesting catches. To claim it, customers must first prepay for 3 months of service in advance. The industry trend of offering plans that require the prepayment of several months in advance continues to spread like wildfire, with Verizon Prepaid now being the latest brand to join the blaze. The offer will be available at participating retailers only and is available for an extended period, with an end date of 1/31/25.
Verizon Prepaid offers two unlimited plans. There's a $50/month offering (after a $10/month autopay discount) and a $60/month plan (after a $10/month autopay discount), with taxes and fees costing extra. To take advantage of this deal, customers must prepay $75 for their first 3 months on the $50 plan (which is 50% off) or $90 for the first 3 months on the $60 plan (also 50% off). After the initial 3 months, the monthly cost will be $25 for the $50 plan or $30 for the $60 plan for the next 12 months. Once the 12-month period ends, the plans will return to their regular rates.
The differences between Verizon Prepaid's $50 and $60 plans can be seen in the table below.
Unlimited | Unlimited Plus | |
Price | $50/mo | $60/mo |
5G Network Access | Yes | Yes |
5G Ultra Wideband | No | Yes |
Priority Data* | NA | 50GB |
Hotspot | 5GB** | 25GB** |
Global Calling to 1 Country of Your Choosing | No | Yes |
Video Streams | 480p | Up to 4K |
*Data speeds for the first 50GB of monthly data used when connected to 4G LTE or 5G Nationwide networks will not slow down compared to other customers when the network is congested.
**Hotspot data speeds on the $50 plan slow to 600Kbps after 5GB is used during the billing cycle. On the $60 plan, it's a bit more complicated. After 25GB, hotspot data speeds are reduced to 600Kbps when on 5G Nationwide or 4G LTE networks and 3Mbps when connected to the Ultra Wideband network.
Editor's Take
Carrier-owned prepaid brand deals have been exploding over the last several weeks, led by Verizon and T-Mobile, with AT&T yet to respond.
Straight Talk Wireless recently announced a $25/month unlimited data prepaid plan available at Walmart and through the Straight Talk website. A couple of weeks ago, Verizon's Simple Mobile brand launched a triple data offer. Just days ago, BestMVNO reported that Mint Mobile released a 4 lines free deal for subscribers switching from AT&T, Verizon, or their respective MVNOs. Visible responded to that deal by releasing a $15/month unlimited plan offer with a 5-year price lock guarantee. Metro by T-Mobile has long been running a $25/month unlimited plan for BYOD subscribers.
The lower price points are a great win for consumers, but they put pressure on MVNOs by encroaching on price points they typically provide service at, yet they can't offer truly unlimited data plans like the carrier-owned prepaid brands can. Of course, MVNOs trying to compete on price alone can be a recipe for disaster, as Jon Horovitz regularly points out.
