After a reader inquiry, BestMVNO has learned that Unreal Mobile is now offering premium voice service with its wireless plans.  The move was confirmed to BestMVNO by representatives from Red Pocket Mobile.  Unreal Mobile and Freedompop were purchased by Red Pocket Mobile last summer and this is the first major change that the company has made with either brand.

A company spokesperson has told BestMVNO that all current customers will soon be transitioned to premium voice SIMs which will offer the same native calling and texting experience that current Red Pocket Mobile GSMA customers experience.  Red Pocket's GSMA subscribers have service on AT&T's network.

Customers currently with Unreal Mobile will soon receive an email from the company informing them about the new SIM that is going to be sent to them and how to transition to it.  With the new SIM, customers will no longer be required to install or use the Unreal Mobile app to place phone calls.  All new customers will receive the new premium voice SIM card by default.  The feature upgrade will come without a pricing change.

Subscribe to BestMVNO and always be informed of the latest deals, plans and carrier promotions!

For those that don't know, Unreal Mobile had operated over the years by providing voice services through the use of the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).  VoIP phone calls have often been criticized by users for offering a subpar calling experience.  Critics say VoIP can induce voice lag where one person speaks and the other person can't hear what has been said without there first being a slight delay in the audio transmission.  When I reviewed Unreal Mobile, my calling experience was pretty poor due to the use of VoIP.  I experienced audio quality that was garbled and frequently dropped.  So the addition of calling that uses AT&T's native voice network should be welcomed by all customers.

Unreal Mobile Available Phone Plans

For those interested in Unreal Mobile's service, the following plans are available:

  • $10/month - 1GB data
  • $20/month - 3GB data
  • $30/month - 5GB data
  • $40/month - 10GB data

All plans include unlimited talk, text, and data with the specified amount of data at high-speeds before throttling to 2G data speeds.  VoLTE and WiFi calling are also included and available on both iOS and supported Android devices.

Unreal Mobile SIM cards and service plans can be purchased directly from the Unreal Mobile website and are also available in stores through Best Buy and Target.

I have tried over 5 target stores but they are still selling the old chips that will not work. Can you tell me what to look for so I do not get an old chip?

I got my UnrealMobile SIM and have been having trouble doing my number transfer for over a week. I have my account and it says $10 a month, but UnrealMobile.com NOW SAYS $15.00 a month. Looks like they have already raised their base monthly price. I do not know what I am getting into.

I only see 3-6-12 month plans on the website offers and that starts at a “$15” introductory price for 3 month ($45 total), then $25. Basically the plans are the same as Mint Mobile, both price and data (though it is AT&T).

I just confirmed with live chat that these are the only plans they offer on the website now. Logged into the dashboard I see old plan offers but clicking on them brings me to the above. I wanted the $10 monthly 1gb one since that’s a great deal for an AT&T mvno with premium voice but I guess I’m out of luck. Not sure if you’re being grandfathered or not.

I just received the e-mail but it looks like they’re charging you $10.99 ($10 for the plan, $0.99 for the setup fee) even with an existing account. =/

yeah. figured redpocket is really switching you from old unreal-freedompop mvno system to new unreal-redpocket mvno system. they call it an upgrade. but it seems more like migration from one mvno system to another mvno system. it’s like shutdown (of the old unreal-freedompop system) but actually porting to new service (new unreal-redpocket system) happening months later meaning now with this transition that they call an upgrade to unreal premium voice which requires a new sim card and setting up new accounting for the plans and porting to the new unreal-redpocket system. ordered new sim but have yet to receive confirmation email — it just finished with no confirmation screen. my guess is that is a holdover from how incomplete the old unreal-freedompop website always seemed to me.

Unreal sent an email out to switch our APNs from unreal.com.attz to fp.com.attz, so I’m not sure if we are migrating away from FP/Unreal.

Are we really getting actual cell service? I never got that impression. I just thought this meant we get VoLTE, but if we get an actual cell number, that’d be awesome.

In the link in this article to get the free sim,I clicked the get free sim,and I entered a zipcode and Email address then I entered a physical address. All it showed is the 40.00 plan (40.99) including a .99 setup fee. There is NO option to select the 10.00 plan. Is this premium voice good on the lower tiered plans?

I tried that still it takes me to the 40.99 plan.
I even went to unreal website and it wanted 14.99 for the sim + the 10.00 for the plan.

They billed my credit card $13.99 each and mailed out the sims, you cannot call the company, you have to open a ticket and they email you, no online chat either

Are you sure about this? I also got the APN update notification and updated my settings. Why would they do this if they were going to have us switching our SIM’s out soon anyway?

I did too and they charged my credit card $13.99 and we already have service with them.
