Editor's Take
While upgrades to wireless plans are always welcome, that doesn’t necessarily mean they offer the best value. Ultra Mobile’s lowest-priced monthly plan, $15 per month for 500MB of high-speed data, stands out as an example. This plan is difficult to find on Ultra’s own website, suggesting that the company isn’t eager to promote it. When purchased as an annual plan, the cost drops to $10 per month, which is more prominently advertised on their website. However, even at that price, it remains a relatively poor value compared to other options.
There are other providers on the T-Mobile network that offer similar international features and significantly more data for the same or lower price. For example, Tello offers 5GB of data for $15 per month, along with international calls and texts, and a 2GB plan for $10 per month. The same issue applies to Ultra’s other limited data plans, there are simply better-value options available from other T-Mobile MVNOs. Consumers can easily use tools like the BestMVNO phone plan filter to compare and find plans with similar features but better value.
Ultra Mobile’s unlimited data plans do offer comparatively better value when unlimited data plan shopping, particularly when seeking a plan with international features. However, they recently discontinued a $20 per month unlimited data annual plan, which lessens their competitiveness. Many carrier-owned prepaid brands across all networks are now targeting new “bring your own device” customers with unlimited plans at around $25 per month. For Ultra Mobile to remain competitive, it needs to offer similar deals.
Additionally, Ultra could improve its value proposition by making international roaming credits renew monthly instead of being one-time bonuses. Doubling or even tripling the data allotments for its limited data plans would also help bring them more in line with the market.
