FreedomPop has launched some Best Buy exclusive plans. The MVNO says that the plans are compatible with GSM devices from networks such as AT&T, T-Mobile and Cricket. Given that FreedomPop has a partnership with AT&T, we can safely infer that these plans run on the AT&T network.
Pricing starts at under $5/month for unlimited talk, and text with 1GB of 4G LTE data.
Plan Details
The plans being offered are actually multi-month plans. It seems that FreedomPop is expanding on the multi-month plans it began offering a short while ago.
FreedomPop has informed me that these Best Buy exclusive plans come with the following features:
- Unlimited talk and text with 1GB of LTE data to use every month
- Voicemail & MMS
- Compatibility with most unlocked Android & iOS GSM devices including unlocked phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, Metro PCS, Cricket and other GSM carriers
The plan is available as a 3 month offering for $19.99 which works out to an average cost of about $6.66/month and a 12 month offering for $49.99 or about $4.17/month.
I'm actually a bit skeptical about the claim of voicemail and MMS being included in this offer. I've reached out to FreedomPop for an explanation and to see if they made a mistake with their mailing, because typically they charge extra for MMS and voicemail. Even if they aren't included and cost a few dollars extra each month, this is still a good bargain.
(Updated: 4/23/18
FreedomPop has confirmed to me that the plans do in fact come with MMS and voicemail. )
Keep in mind that FreedomPop is a VoIP provider, and that talk and text service is provided over data networks only. This means you get data and WiFi calling and texting but not traditional calling over a cellular voice network.
FreedomPop 99¢ Trial offer
In addition to the Best Buy plans, FreedomPop has got a new trial offer out. The new trial offer costs just 99¢ and includes the following:
- Service on AT&T's network
- Unlimited talk and text with 2GB of LTE data, regularly priced at $24.99/month
- Free trial of FreedomPop Phone Premier, regularly priced at $7.99/month
- Free shipping
FreedomPop Phone Premier adds the following features to the base plan:
- MMS
- Visual voicemail
- Data Rollover - rollover your unused data and bank up to 20 GB for use anytime
- Data Compression - get up to 2x your data with compression technology
- Usage Alerts - prevent pay as you go charges before going over data limits with usage alerts
- Private Internet - ensures that your internet, voice calls & texts are secure and encrypted
- Ad Blocker - block intrusive ads, pop-ups, and video ads to enhance browsing
- Sponsor Ads Free Messaging - avoid banner ads in your messaging app
This is a good deal for those who just want to get essentially a free month of service on a phone plan, and those who can live without the Phone Premier package. With the Phone Premier package, the plan will end up costing $32.98/month after the first month, and there are cheaper ATT MVNO's out there. But if you just care about the 2GB of data without a long term multi-month commitment, this looks like a pretty good deal.
This product is perfect for those who want to enjoy low-cost service and a peace of mind as everything is prepaid!
I have to admit that I am a long time user of the free plan on FreedomPop. I originally switched to them because I realized that I was paying a huge amount for home internet, then a huge amount for mobile internet. I was paying twice for the same service. When I learned how to use Wi-Fi properly, I was only using about 250-350MB of mobile data a month and peaked at about 1GB of data when I went on vacation or a trip where I didn’t have Wi-Fi all over. That led to me shopping for something better – and this was years ago!
Since then, FreedomPop has developed into the perfect bridge for people like me don’t need a ton of mobile data because I had WiFi at home and the office. I spend roughly 3 hours a day away from WiFi so, why pay $40-90 for an unlimited plan? For less than the cost of one month of service on those “big guys” and you don’t miss a beat in the of connection. The evolution of FreedomPop has been amazing. From those Sprint WiMAX speeds to the newest AT&T LTE connections, the service has only gotten better and better. This $49.99 plan is a steal if you have WiFi at home and even better if you have WiFi at the office or your school. Take a look at your actual usage and see how much you can save a year with FreedomPop.
For the voice/text/500MB plan on Verizon, you’ll pocket $400 a year per line!
This deal is really good for light users, like me. It even includes Voicemail and MMS, which are normally paid-for features if you get the free plan.
Wow, I think the 12-month plan is the best deal so far. So tempting, especially it includes free voicemail and MMS.
I’ve used FreedomPop for a few years actually, and their service has been absolutely great thus far! I use my SIM in a hotspot as a backup device since I often find public WiFi to be unreliable.
this is the overall best deal on the market, service is great, no problems, sim card works great, messaging etc all the frills and thrills are fantastic, people support is exceptional, correspondence is great, pricing is right, I can’t find anything to whine about. my voice mail and texting works fine, tell me of any other deal that is equal or better if you can…….
If you have some contacts at freedompop and are able to get their team to fix the issue sooner, that would be great I have 3 other sims from bestbuy I would like to activate but don’t want to deal with the bug and wait for a refund.
Hey just a quick warning, freedompop is having an issue right now on their activation page. Since sims bought at bestbuy buy have to be activated at http://www.freedompop.com/activate when you get to the check out screen and you have to pay the activation fee, there is a check box saying to add $10 credit. I unchecked the box, and took a screenshot just in case. And freedompop still charged me $10.99 for the activation so its $60.98. Hoping to get a refund from them since I have proof of the mischarge. Even the email they sent shows I did not sign up for the extra $10 credit but the account page and my credit card says otherwise
