Ultra Mobile is a T-Mobile MVNO that offers low cost phone plans that feature global calling and texting.  The company also powers Univision Mobile, whose plans are identical to Ultra Mobile's although Unvision Mobile is marketed towards individuals who need to frequently contact persons in Latin America.

Ultra Mobile started 2017 off with a a new cell phone plan lineup.  Apparently the company decided that the changes weren't enough, as it just announced another small change to one of its phone plans that Univision Mobile will continue to largely mirror.  The $45 plan offered by each MVNO will now include 10 GB of what they are calling "high speed data" instead of 7 GB.  Ultra Mobile refers to 3G data as high speed data which I find to be a bit misleading on the surface, but I'll get back to this in a moment.

The 10 GB of "high speed" data included with this plan is actually a 50-50 mix of both 3G (what Ultra calls DataXtra) and 4G LTE data, so subscribers will get 5 GB of data in each speed class.  I'm sure some of you power users out there are probably rolling your eyes at that last statement, but I am currently reviewing the MVNO for a future post and find data at that lower speed to be more than adequate for my needs.  I just wish the company didn't tout that they offer 10 GB of high speed data with the plan, even though it's quite possible the average user won't be able to tell the speed difference once they go over their 4G LTE data allotment in a billing cycle.

With the change to Ultra Mobile's cell phone plans, their plan lineup now looks as follows:

  • $19- 100 MB (hard capped) data, unlimited calls to 60 international destinations, $1.25 int'l call credit, $10 int'l roaming credit with rollover
  • $24- 500 MB (hard capped) 4G data, unlimited calls to 30 international destinations, $7 int'l call credit, $10 int'l roaming credit with rollover
  • $29- 1 GB 4G data+ 1 GB 3G DataXtra, unlimited calls to 60 international destinations, $2.50 int'l call credit, $10 int'l roaming credit with rollover
  • $34- 2 GB 4G data + 2 GB 3G DataXtra, unlimited calls to 60 international destinations, 0 int'l call credit, $10 int'l roaming credit with rollover
  • $45 - 5 GB 4G data + 5 GB 3G DataXtra (previously 2 GB of DataXtra), unlimited calls to 60 international destinations, $0 int'l call credit, $15 int'l roaming credit with rollover
  • $49 - 2 GB 4G data + 2 GB 3G DataXtra, unlimited calls to 30 international destinations, $20 int'l call credit, $15 int'l roaming credit with rollover
  • $54 - 10 GB 4G data + 10 GB 3G DataXtra , unlimited calls to 60 international destinations, $0 int'l call credit, $15 int'l roaming credit with rollover

Now that another provider has altered their phone plans, what do you think about the change?  What do you think of Ultra Mobile's reference of "DataXtra" or 3G data as high speed?
