In August, Ultra Mobile updated its multi-month plans. On October 1, Ultra Mobile began running its first promo revolving around one of those multi-month plans. Customers could buy 3 months and get 3 months free or buy 6 months and get 6 months free. The offer is still available and centered on a plan that includes unlimited talk, text, and data with the first 3GB of data each month at 4G LTE data speeds. Customers could pay for 3 months and get 6 months of wireless service for $66 or they could pay for 6 months and get 12 months of wireless service for $126.
Now there's a new promo code available that can save customers an additional 20% on their purchase. The promo code is ULTRA and it can be used with any Ultra Mobile phone plan including all multi-month plans and all "classic" pay by the month phone plans. Of course, shoppers will get the most bang for their bucks by applying the code to one of the promotional multi-month plan offerings.
Using the promo code customers will pay just $52.80 for the 3-month plan that provides an additional 3 months of service for free. That works out to an average cost of $8.80 per month. However, in my area, taxes and fees added an additional $11.15 to the cost of the plan bringing the price for 6 months of service up to $63.95 with the promo code applied. That's an average cost of $10.66/month.
On the 6-month plan that provides an additional 6 months of service for free, the cost drops down to $100.80 with the promo code applied or an average cost of $8.40/month. Taxes and fees added another $20.93 to the total cost of the plan in my area bringing the final price of the plan up to $121.73 or an average cost of $10.14/month.
Taxes and fees won't be the same for everyone and do vary based on location. The promotional plans are for new customers only, defined as those who have not had Ultra Mobile service in the past 60 days.
Editor's Take
This latest promotional offer from Ultra Mobile is likely in place to somewhat offset an ongoing promotion from its sister brand Mint Mobile. Mint Mobile is currently offering all new customers any 3-month plan for $45 total plus taxes and fees. Customers can choose an unlimited talk, text, and data plan with either the first 3GB, 8GB or 12GB of data each month at 4G LTE data speeds before throttling to 2G data speeds. The promotion effectively makes it pointless for new Mint Mobile subscribers to signup for Mint Mobile's base plan with 3GB of data as customers will receive a better value by subscribing to either the 8GB or 12GB plans. Ultra Mobile's latest promotion brings value back to subscribing to a plan with 3GB of data when comparing the two MVNO's together. Both providers operate on T-Mobile.
