In the latest prepaid report Wave7 Research sent to its subscribers, the firm noted that PureTalk has launched a new promotion offering any of its plans for $15/month for the first three months. The offer is being pushed through a new “Test Drive: $15” TV ad starring Mike Rowe.

The promotion started July 8 and runs through September 8, 2026. It is available to new customers and current PureTalk customers who add a new line. Existing lines cannot be moved onto the promotional rate. Regular pricing, ranging from $24.99 to $64.99/month, begins with the fourth billing cycle. Taxes, and fees cost extra.

If the headline sounds familiar it's because Mint Mobile has repeatedly used the same basic pitch: any plan, including unlimited, for $15/month. Mint is running the offer again this summer and promoting it through TV advertising and online marketing with videos and voiceovers that feature actor Ryan Reynolds. There's also new signage for the offer at Best Buy.

Although PureTalk is using the same headline as Mint, they are not following Mint's bulk pricing model.

Mint requires the entire promotional term to be paid upfront so customers have to pay $45 at sign up for a three month plan. Mint is also offering the same $15/month rate on all plans paid 6 months and 12 months in advance. PureTalk only charges customers for their first month at checkout. Months two and three are billed normally at $15 each before regular rates take affect. This gives PureTalk a lower barrier to entry.

Five PureTalk Plans Are Included

PureTalk’s promotion covers all five of its current monthly plans.

The entry-level plan normally costs $24.99/month and includes 7GB of high-speed data with unlimited talk and text. Customers save $29.97 over three months by getting it at the promotional rate.

PureTalk’s remaining four plans are marketed as unlimited. However, each includes 50GB of high-speed data before speeds are reduced to 256Kbps for the rest of the billing cycle. The plans are separated primarily by hotspot allowances, international features, device discounts, and bundled add-on lines.

The $34.99 plan includes 2GB of hotspot data. At $15/month for three months, customers save $59.97.

The $44.99 plan includes 10GB of hotspot data, international calling and texting from the United States, international roaming, $100 off a new phone, and a choice between an Apple Watch plan or a second phone number. Its three-month promotional savings total $89.97.

The $54.99 plan raises the hotspot allowance to 20GB, increases the phone discount to $200, and includes both an Apple Watch plan and a second phone number. Customers save $119.97 during the promotional period.

The top $64.99 plan includes 30GB of hotspot data, international features, $300 off a new phone, an Apple Watch plan, a tablet plan, and a second phone number. PureTalk advertises total three-month savings of $149.97 on that plan.

Customers are allowed to change plans during the promotional period without losing the $15 price. PureTalk says the monthly charge will remain $15 through the first three billing cycles regardless of which plan is selected. Device subsidy or financing agreements could place restrictions on later plan changes.

The offer cannot be combined with other discounts or promotions. PureTalk’s 20% military and first responder discounts do not apply during the promotional period, although eligible customers can have it begin with their fourth month of service.

PureTalk Puts Price Ahead Of Its Usual Brand Pitch

PureTalk has traditionally leaned heavily on values-based marketing, U.S.-based customer service, support for veterans, and endorsements from conservative radio hosts. Mike Rowe joined the company as a spokesman in 2025 and has appeared in several of its television and digital campaigns.

The new campaign puts a much simpler message in front of consumers: pick any plan and pay $15/month for three months. A pitch like that temporarily removes price from a consumer's purchasing decision. Every plan costs the same, so the top tier become the obvious promotional and best value.

Editor’s Take

Mint Mobile has spent years teaching wireless shoppers to recognize “any plan for $15” as an attention-grabbing offer. PureTalk copied that headline and hired Mike Rowe to deliver it, while Mint Mobile relies on Ryan Reynolds to deliver its messaging.

PureTalk’s version is easier to try. Mint collects at least $45 upfront and locks the customer into a prepaid term. PureTalk collects one month at a time. A new customer can test the service for $15 plus taxes and fees without making a larger commitment on day one.

However, once the promotion ends, things drastically differ. PureTalk’s top plan jumps from $15 to $64.99 at the start of month four. That is a $49.99 monthly increase and much larger than the jump in Mint's flagship plan which only goes up by $15/month assuming the customer renews their plan annually,

PureTalk is taking a different financial risk than Mint. Mint collects the full promotional term upfront, locking in as much as a year of revenue. It also benefits from being owned by T-Mobile, which controls the network Mint operates on. PureTalk lowers the upfront cost by billing customers monthly, but it is betting that enough of them will stay once regular pricing returns. Without Mint’s ownership advantage, PureTalk’s $15 offer like functions more as a customer-acquisition expense than a profitable short term promotion.

“This is an aggressive move from PureTalk, which has an increasing share of voice as a direct-to-consumer play in the wireless market.  Between its radio partnerships, its Mike Rowe endorsement, its TV advertising, and its aggressive offers, PureTalk is a brand that is increasingly worth watching.” –Jeff Moore, Principal of Wave7 Research
