MobileX Begins Upgrading Network With Reduced Latency, Faster Speeds, and Better Onboarding

MobileX Major Network Upgrade

MobileX has started rolling out an update to its network today. Subscribers who have gotten the update may notice reduced latency and faster data speeds with improved connection reliability. New customers, will soon have a better onboarding experience with automatic APN configuration. This is an issue that has mostly impacted iPhone users who have had to manually download an APN to their phones for MobileX to work. APN stands for Access Point Name, and it is a settings profile on your phone that enables it to connect to the network.

The network update is rolling out to customers in batches and will continue through September 30th. Subscribers will receive text messages and email instructions with a link to click explaining how to update their devices to take advantage of the network improvements. Customers are asked to complete the steps provided in the instructions by no later than September 30th. Subscribers failing to update by this date will lose their mobile internet access.

I am currently a MobileX customer myself but I have not yet received the network upgrade notifications.

As part of the upgrade, customers will have to have their phone's MobileX APN profile updated. It will be switching from MX5G.VZWENTP to a native Verizon APN of VZWINTERNET. Subscribers attempting to update their APNs before being asked to will find that their data does not work, as I discovered when l tried this myself. As far as I'm aware there is not a workaround to get the update quicker.

MobileX's CEO and founder, Peter Adderton, addressed the network update in a press release, stating, "We've listened closely to our customers, and their feedback has driven us to make these major network improvements, which will enhance the entire MobileX experience from activation to daily usage." Adderton also shared that in his own tests, he observed 3x faster data speeds and half the latency. These updates are occurring without any price increases.

Previously, MobileX is believed to have operated through its own cloud-based core network, routing subscriber connections through a limited number of locations before reaching Verizon's network. However, the APN update indicates that MobileX traffic may now connect directly to Verizon’s network, bypassing this intermediary step. This change would seem to be the reason some subscribers will see faster data speeds and lower latency. Update: Peter Adderton has confirmed in a Reddit thread that Verizon has updated their systems allowing MobileX a new way to integrate into their network.

MobileX launched as a beta service in November of 2022 and exited the beta in February 2023. The Verizon-powered MVNO sells SIM kits and phones in Walmart stores as well as online through the MobileX website, with some wireless dealers also carrying the brand. MobileX is known for its highly customizable plans and the use of A.I. to help customers better understand their data needs.
