Mint Mobile has updated its wireless plans to now offer a truly unlimited 5G data plan. Previously, its flagship plan was capped at 40GB of 5G data before speeds were throttled to 3G. Now, subscribers get unlimited 5G data, though speeds may be temporarily slowed after 35GB during network congestion.
The plan allows for 10GB of data to be used for hotspot. Video streaming is limited to a resolution of 480p. Taxes and fees cost extra.
This plan is regularly priced at $30/month when paid for annually, $35/month when 6 months is paid for in advance, and $40/month when only paid for three months in advance. However, as part of a promotional offer, new customers can pick up the plan for $25/month when prepaid for annually. After a year the plan will renew at its regular rate.
Mint Mobile's new truly unlimited data plan does have some downstream impact. The company often sells phone and plan bundles at a discount. Now customers can pick up a bundle with a truly unlimited plan with the plan advertised as costing just $15/month as part of the package deal. A couple of bundled phone and plan featured offers include the Google Pixel 9 with the annual plan for $579 or $49/month, and a Samsung Galaxy A16 5G bundle for $360 or $30/month.
In May 2024, T-Mobile closed on its acquisition of Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile for around $1.35 billion. No major plan changes were announced immediately after the acquisition but a 60-day phone unlock policy was implemented. It wasn't until October 2024 when T-Mobile made its first big changes to either brand. BestMVNO reported that Ultra Mobile went truly unlimited on October 1. And now over four full months later, it's Mint Mobile's turn to do the same.
Mint Mobile frequently runs TV ads highlighting its phone plans and offers. I'm unaware of any ads being launched yet to feature the updated plan. However, it's a solid bet to expect one soon.
The $25/month price point for truly unlimited data plans continues to be an area of intense competition between carrier owned prepaid brands. And now Mint Mobile is another brand participating in the competition. Verizon brands Total Wireless, Straight Talk Wireless, Visible, Verizon Prepaid (dealer only offer) all sell truly unlimited 5G data plans at that price point. Metro by T-Mobile has one as well. AT&T's Cricket Wireless offers a truly unlimited 5G data plan but only to new customers that are willing to prepay for a year of service in advance.
A push to the $25/month price point for truly unlimited data plans puts a lot of pressure on MVNOs who typically thrive around that price point and generally can't offer truly unlimited data plans themselves. You can pick up Mint Mobile's new plan and phone plan bundles here.
Temporarily slowed likely means most always 512Kbps until the next month/billing cycle. May prove to be a downgrade from the 40gb plan.
