Mint Mobile has updated its wireless plans to include roaming in Canada. New and current customers will get unlimited talk and text while traveling in Canada plus 3GB of high-speed data to use. The 3GB data allotment is completely separate from each Mint plan's domestic data allotment. If you're on Mint Mobile's $15/month base plan that includes 5GB of monthly data, you'll have 5GB of data to use in the USA and another 3GB to use while in Canada.

All current customers will have the feature automatically added to their plans this month (July), once their 30-day monthly billing cycle resets. To roam while in Canada, subscribers must ensure they have data roaming turned on in their phones. When crossing or nearing the border into Canada, subscribers will receive a text message from Mint Mobile informing them that they have coverage.

Free roaming in Canada is just one of a few changes recently implemented by Mint Mobile since T-Mobile closed on its acquisition of the brand on May 1, 2024. Shortly after the deal closed, Mint Mobile picked up "Scam Screener." Scam Screener notifies subscribers if a phone call they are receiving is likely to be spam or a spoofed number. The feature can be turned on or off at the customer's discretion. More recently, T-Mobile also fulfilled its acquisition promise to the FCC by reducing Mint Mobile's device unlock policy to 60 days, down from 365 days.

Over the last couple of years, we've seen the prepaid wireless market competitively heat up with the explosion of annual plan offerings from many providers. But more quietly during that same period, prepaid and MVNO providers have slowly been adding Canada (and Mexico) roaming to their plans as a differentiator to try and attract more customers.

Just days ago, Verizon announced a rebrand of Total by Verizon to Total Wireless. With the rebrand, Mexico and Canada roaming were added to single-line plans. Last fall, Spectrum Mobile added roaming in both countries on its flagship plan, and Xfinity Mobile added it just a few months ago. US Mobile also offers it on plans, and Red Pocket added it about a year ago. Visible by Verizon, Google Fi, PureTalk, and H2O Wireless also offer various degrees of roaming in Canada and Mexico at no additional cost.

They should upgrade a plan to QCI 6 just like Tmo prepaid is.
