Google Fi has refreshed its wireless plan lineup with the introduction of a new, lower-cost unlimited option called Unlimited Essentials. Priced at $35/month for a single line (plus taxes and fees), the plan includes unlimited talk, text, and data. However, mobile hotspot is not included, and data speeds are reduced to 256Kbps after 30GB of usage. Multi-line discounts are available: two lines drop the cost to $30/line, and four lines to $23/line. The plan also supports smartwatch connectivity for select devices, including Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy watches.

Additional changes include:

  • Simply Unlimited renamed to Unlimited Standard. It now includes 50GB of 5G data up from 35GB, and 25GB of hotspot up from 5GB, while retaining its $50/month single-line price.
  • Unlimited Plus has been renamed to Unlimited Premium and now offers 100GB of 5G data up from 50GB, and 50GB of full speed hotspot.
  • Data only eSIM connectivity is now available for tablets and laptops. Previously a physical SIM card was needed. Data only connectivity for tablets and laptops remains free with the Unlimited Premium plan.
  • Expanded international coverage. Unlimited Premium and Flexible (pay as you go data) plans get coverage in an additional 92 international locations and 5G coverage is now available in an additional 54 countries. iPhones users also now have international 5G data usage.
  • Voicemail upgrade, in the coming days you'll no longer need to use the Fi ap to listen to your voicemails and can use your native phone app.

Editor's Take

It’s great to see Google Fi offer a more affordable unlimited plan, but the value, especially for single-line users, is questionable. Competing MVNOs and prepaid brands like US Mobile, MobileX, Visible, Tello, Helium, and Metro by T-Mobile offer more data (or truly unlimited 5G data plans) for as little as $25/month, often with hotspot support included.

That said, Fi’s plan does have unique benefits, particularly smartwatch connectivity, which many competitors don’t offer. For families, the 4-line price of $90 might be appealing, though with taxes and fees added to the plan's cost, it could end up more expensive than tax inclusive plans like Cricket’s $100/month for 4 lines plan.

The higher-tier plans still carry a premium price, but include features such as international roaming, free tablet/laptop data, and 100GB of Google One storage, may justify the cost for some users. For those who don’t need those extras, better value exists elsewhere.
