I wrote in this space about a year ago about a very innovative company that makes sure that devices being purchased by carriers, MVNOs, & wholesale distributors are compatible with the networks that they are intended to be used on. PrologMobile, Inc (prologmobile.com) provides this service which in layman’s terms defines device compatibility as checking a device to gauge its “level of fit” for a specific network.”

PrologMobile CEO and co-founder, Seth Heine, also joined me on The Boon of Wireless Podcast (Ep. 6 Unlocking the Potential of the Pre-Owned Phone Market with Seth Heine (youtube.com) for an in-depth discussion about the journey of PrologMobile, its pivotal role within the wireless ecosystem, and how it's solving critical challenges for its customers. Seth stated, “from ensuring device and network compatibility to leveraging the power of AI in enhancing mobile device data, PrologMobile is enhancing the reverse supply chain and bringing unparalleled value to the industry.”

PrologMobile has teamed up with The GSMA to bring the most advanced device compatibility tool available anywhere to the market. This enables PrologMobile and The GSMA to bring groundbreaking new tools and technology to market on a global scale.

The GSMA is a global organization unifying the mobile ecosystem to discover, develop, and deliver innovation foundational to positive business environments and societal change.

“We could not be more excited to be partnering with The GSMA team,” said PrologMobile Co-Founder and Board Member Jon Newman.

So, What’s The Issue? Why Do I need to Know About Device Compatibility?

Handset manufacturers build devices specific to carriers, countries, and regions. Not all devices of the same make and model are built with the same internal hardware. A small difference in this hardware can impact whether the device will activate on a specific network and if it does connect, will the customer experience good quality service?

In layman’s terms, PrologMobile’s solutions help prevent customers from buying devices that will not activate on their desired network, while also helping companies who are buying and selling devices around the world make sure that they will work on the intended network as well.

Device compatibility data, when used correctly, can impact both acquisition and disposition channels. For example, device compatibility affects acquisition costs by:

  • Knowing before purchase if the devices will activate in specific countries or regions.
  • Identifying the most the largest populations and GDP rates.
  • Knowing where the devices will activate to better understand resale prices in those regions.

With regards to disposing of the devices:

  • Knowing before the sale and/or shipping that the device will activate in a target country or region.
  • Identifies which devices can be re-activated locally.
  • Identifies which network devices can be re-activated.
  • Identifies device-compatible markets with the highest resale values.

PrologMobile currently provides this type of device information for over 500 networks worldwide and with the explosion of the number of used or CPO (certified pre-owned) handsets reaching astronomical levels, it’s always a good idea to know that what you are buying and selling will provide the subscriber the best possible customer experience.

To ensure the validity of the data that PrologMobile provides, in October 2023, they were granted a new patent. At the heart of this achievement lies PrologMobile’s new technology, which quantifies the level of connectivity between any smartphone and cellular network. This innovation isn’t just about cutting-edge tech, it’s about making a meaningful impact on billions of consumers worldwide.

Seth Heine stated he couldn’t be more excited about this development.

“This patent demonstrates our unwavering commitment to spearheading technology solutions in the used mobile device circular economy,” he stated. “We’re not only proud of our platform’s progress to date but also thrilled about its potential to address future needs and further optimize this critical and invaluable global supply chain. As we broaden our horizons to better support carriers worldwide, this technology will serve as the cornerstone for bringing innovative capabilities to the market.”

For those who need a deeper dive, the patent is titled “System and Method for Remotely Assessing, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Ranking Mobile Network Operator and Country Compatibility Against Mobile Device Spectrum and Technology Capabilities,” this patent delves into the intricate compatibility between connected devices and mobile carrier networks.

When asked about the patent, Seth continued, “This patent demonstrates our unwavering commitment to spearheading technology solutions in the used mobile device circular economy. We’re not only proud of our platform’s progress to date but also thrilled about its potential to address future needs and further optimize this critical and invaluable global supply chain. As we broaden our horizons to better support carriers worldwide, this technology will serve as the cornerstone for bringing innovative capabilities to the market.”

In closing, I asked Seth what does the future look like for PrologMobile?

“Our mission is to revolutionize the global ecosystem of connected devices, enhancing how they are acquired, traded, and utilized. These enhancements equate to enhanced affordability and choice for consumers, alongside improved network performance for a seamless user experience worldwide."
