Starting Friday, August 21st, ATT GoPhone customers on a $60 GoPhone plan will get unlimited talk (to landline and mobile) and text as well as 4GB of data to use in the USA or while roaming in Mexico or Canada. According to an ATT representative I spoke to, data speeds will be at up to 3G speeds while roaming in Mexico or Canada.
For those interested in the new offering, you may be happy to know that ATT is even offering a $5 discount to the plan if you use autopay, bringing the total cost to $55.
ATT's $45 and $65 GoPhone plans also include rollover data, although the data only rolls over for 30 days before expiring. If your high speed data allotment gets used up during the billing cycle, your data speed gets reduced to 128 kbps but unlimited.
The fact that ATT is now offering data roaming across the borders is not surprising considering that other carriers like T-Mobile have been doing that globally since last year. Several other MVNOs also offer international roaming.
With pressure from T-Mobile and due to ATT's acquisition of Mexican wireless carriers NII Holding, i.e. Nextel Mexico, as well as Lusacell this progression to free roaming in North America was the next logical move for the carrier.
