Tello Mobile has kicked off what appears to be the first "Back to School" promotion of the season. New customers who activate by August 11 can get Tello’s 5GB plan for just $10 for their first month, a small discount from the usual $14/month price (plus taxes and fees).
The 5GB plan includes:
- Unlimited talk and text to over 60 international destinations
- Full use of your data for mobile hotspot
- Video streaming capped at 480p
However, after you use up your 5GB of high-speed data, there is no unlimited 2G data, meaning you’ll be out of data unless you add a top-up. Without a data connection, you won’t be able to send MMS (picture messages). Data top-ups are available at $5 for 1GB, $10 for 3GB, or $15 for 5GB.
After your first month is up you can stay on the plan and pay its regular rate, move to another Tello plan, or port out. Tello's flagship plan with 35GB of monthly 5G data and a 5GB hotspot allotment is their only plan to include unlimited data after the high-speed allotment is consumed. However, Tello no longer specifies what data speeds are reduced to which I believe used to be disclosed at 256Kbps.
Tello Mobile is a T-Mobile powered MVNO. If you are interested in their offer, you can pick it up here.
Editor's Take
While Tello’s discount is nice, it would be more competitive if it were deeper or lasted for more than just one month. Other T-Mobile MVNOs are offering stronger deals for new customers. For example, Lyca Mobile currently has a one-month offer of 15GB for $7.50 (regularly $33/month), and its 5GB plan is $7/month if you prepay for three months.
