MobileX has announced it will launch "Gold Network" data access options which will become available on October 18th. The service will offer customers priority data access on its network for a small premium over its standard rate plans. Standard custom data plans without priority access will see a small price reduction.

The Gold Network will give customers the option to purchase data plans that are prioritized over other traffic on the network. This should improve data speeds and latency with a more stable connection during network congestion, such as at concerts, sporting events, or in dense urban areas.

MobileX will offer several ways for customers to access the Gold Network:

  • Gold On Demand: Customers can purchase priority data at a rate of $2.10 per GB. The price for standard data will be $1.90 per GB, a decrease from the previous price of $2.10 per GB.
  • Gold Unlimited 10: This plan includes 10GB of priority data for $19.88 per month. The standard Unlimited 10 plan will remain at $14.88/month.
  • Gold Unlimited 30: This plan includes 30GB of priority data for $29.88 per month. The standard Unlimited 30 plan will remain $24.88/month.
  • Gold Build Your Own: Customers can add priority data to custom plans, with priority access starting at $4.08 per month. Standard data for custom plans will be available from $3.88 per month, down from $4.08 per month.

“For too long, carriers have dictated how customers access performance on their networks,” said Peter Adderton, founder and CEO of MobileX. “With the Gold Network, we are putting that choice back in the customer’s hands. They can instantly upgrade to priority access when they want it, or simply rely on our regular high-speed data for all other times.”

Adderton stated on X, that the idea for the Gold Network came from a debate he had with various users over priority data.

The new Gold Network options will be available through the MobileX app. New customers can sign up through the app, which is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, or by purchasing a MobileX SIM starter kit at Walmart stores or on Walmart.com.

Editor's Take

Priority data is a feature most often associated with postpaid wireless plans and premium prepaid offerings from the major carriers. Most MVNOs typically provide low-cost plan options but without priority data access, meaning their customers can experience slower speeds when networks are crowded compared to customers on a plan with priority data.

With the Gold Network, MobileX is introducing something unusual for an MVNO: the ability for customers to selectively purchase priority access on demand or as part of a monthly plan. This approach mirrors the company’s overall strategy of offering highly customizable service, where users pay only for what they need. US Mobile is the only other MVNO that I'm aware of that allows its customers to upgrade to priority data access for a small monthly fee on their custom plans.

The pricing is also notable. For example, 10GB of priority data at $19.88/month works out to less than $2 per GB, a rate competitive with entry-level plans at a majority of other MVNOs that also offer 10GB pay by the month plans. However, carrier owned prepaid brands, like Mint Mobile, have pushed truly unlimited plans down to as low as $15/month with promotional pricing, but they do require you to prepay for a year of service and lack priority data access.

This move has the potential to push competitors to reevaluate how they handle network management and customer choice. However, how many customers actually find value in paying extra for temporary or partial priority data access remains to be seen. For many, the base MobileX rates for standard high-speed data will more than suffice.
