AT&T Prepaid is set to increase the cost of its mid-tier monthly plans by $3 per month beginning February 6, 2026.

The price hike targets the brand's phone plans with rollover data. Notably, current customers will not be grandfathered; those already on these plans should see the $3 increase reflected in their first billing cycle after the February deadline.

Is AT&T Prepaid Pushing Customers Toward "Value" Unlimited?

This price adjustment appears to be a nudge to try and move customers away from some legacy tiered plans without formally discontinuing them and toward AT&T Prepaid's newer, speed-capped "Unlimited" offerings.

AT&T currently offers two entry-level unlimited plans that were similar in price to those getting a price hike:

  • $25/month (Online Only): Requires a new single line. It is not eligible for phone discounts.
  • $40/month: Available in-store and online. Eligible for phone discounts.

The Catch: While these "Unlimited" plans are cheaper (or equal in price) to the price updated tiered plans, they come with significant trade-offs. Both plans are capped at 3Mbps speeds for the first 30GB, then throttled further to 1.5Mbps. Additionally, unlike the 5GB and 15GB plans, these unlimited options do not include mobile hotspot or rollover data.

The price hikes may also be driven by AT&T Prepaid’s device subsidy strategy. Currently, customers must purchase a plan priced at $30 or higher to qualify for phone deals. By raising this floor to $33, AT&T can better offset the cost of promotional discounts and what are likely rising wholesale prices for mobile devices.

Better Alternatives on the AT&T Network

If you are an AT&T Prepaid customer frustrated by the price hike, you don’t have to switch networks to find better value. Several MVNOs operating on AT&T’s towers offer significantly more data for less money:

  • Red Pocket Mobile: Recently launched an industry first $30/month plan that includes 50GB of high-speed 5G data. After 50GB, speeds remain very fast at 150Mbps.
  • US Mobile: Continues to run its end of 2025 holiday offers which feature an unlimited high-speed data plan for as low as $16.60/month (when paid for annually). It's standard monthly rate is $25/month.
  • Cricket Wireless (AT&T Owned): Offers a $35/month unlimited plan (with optional hotspot add-on) or an annual unlimited data plan for $25/month (paid as $300 upfront).

For users who rely on mobile hotspot and uncapped data speeds, the $3 increase makes AT&T’s 5GB and 15GB plans less competitive which further erodes their already weak value compared to competing prepaid options. Fortunately there are hundreds of other options on the market for unhappy customers to migrate to.
