Things To Know About ZIP SIM Before You Subscribe

ZIP SIM has closed. The following is provided for legacy purposes only.

ZIP SIM launched in November of 2012.  It is an MVNO brand that runs on the T-Mobile network.  The company focuses on offering temporary phone plans to those that are traveling internationally to the USA.

ZIP SIM SIM cards activate automatically once inserted into a phone generally with no input from the end user required.  Plans can be purchased in increments of 7, 14, 21 and 30 days.  International calling is available as an add-on with rates starting at 1¢/minute.

In late 2017 Zip SIM was purchased by Tucows.  Tucows also owns and operates Ting Mobile.  The move was made to help Tucows expand and strengthen its presence in the global marketplace.

Supported Phones And BYOD Devices

Since ZIP SIM caters to international travelers and Canadians who like to travel south for the winter, it does not sell any phones.  Subscribers must have their own phones.  Any out of contract T-Mobile USA compatible device will work with ZIP SIM.  Most universally unlocked phones from manufacturer’s such as Motorola and Samsung are also compatible.  If you have a phone you’d like to bring to the network from outside the country, it needs to be at a minimum compatible with LTE bands 2 and 4.  For better coverage bands 12, 66 and 71 would also be good to have.  If your phone supports GSM bands 1700/1900/2100 MHZ it will also work but data speeds will likely be very slow.

Where To Buy Service Plans And SIM Cards

ZIP SIM service plans and SIM cards can be purchased directly from the company through their website.  They also can be purchased from independent dealers nationwide and through national and international retailers such as Amazon, and Staples Canada.
